When it comes to light bulbs, try choosing more energy efficient bulbs. If you are one of those people who does not care for the new energy saving bulbs (and yes, there are a lot of people out there who don’t), use the lowest wattage possible for adequate lighting in any room.
Wash your laundry in cold water. Hot or warm water won’t really get those clothes any cleaner, and it takes electricity or some kind of gas to heat your water, eating up energy and money in the process. Hot water also fades and wears clothes out, so skip it. Pass on the dryer when you can and opt for hanging your clothes out in the sun or on a drying rack. The clothes will dry and still smell nice and fresh. This method is also gentler on your fabrics, cost much less in the long run and won’t add extra heat to your house in the summertime.
Central heating and air… sure, it’s convenient, but boy, do we pay a price for that convenience! With energy rates that continue to soar, running a central unit can become costly. Add to that the cost of regular maintenance and eventual replacement… well, the sum total is not pretty. I’m not saying don’t have or use a central unit.
There are times when it might be necessary. However, limit the use by setting the thermostat at a reasonable temperature, allowing the unit to turn itself on and off as needed. In the meantime, consider window air conditioner units and space heaters. You can run these in the rooms that you are using at the moment, and they will use less energy. When it is warm out, consider using fans. A/Cs are great in the scorching heat, but not a full time necessity. They can also wreak havoc on those allergies.
Another good idea is to check with your utility company to see if the offer discounts for using certain appliances during non-peak times. If they do, it might be wise to find out those times and opt to do your laundry and other major tasks during these times.
Hopefully, putting these energy savings tips to use will have you seeing less energy consumption… as well as a huge drop
in your utility bill.
