Average Retail Price of Electricity for Commercial Use

In this post we will compare the state-by-state utility price for small businesses and other commercial operations. Please note that the pricing is in cents per kilowatt hour and as usual we will look at two years: 2008 and 2009 because they do vary.
2008
*Idaho has the best rate at 6.03 cents per kilowatt hour, barely edging out Missouri’s 6.09
*Hawaii has the highest rate at 32.82 cents per kilowatt hour.
2009
*The prize for the lowest electricity rate for commercial use goes the 2008 winner: Idaho. Wouldn’t you be glad to be a small business there – only 6.72 cents per kilowatt hour and you get those famous Idaho potatoes fresh.
*On the flip side the highest rate for commercial usage is Hawaii – that’s 24.35 cents per kilowatt hour, more than 3.62 times the rate in Idaho – but you get compensated by the lovely temperatures, the gorgeous beaches and the jaw-dropping scenery. If you’re a resident of Hawaii and those intangibles don’t help, then just take heart in the fact that at least the rate is considerably lower than the 2008 high.
So no surprises for 2009.
